How to blend two photos together
Two photos in one image, meeting along a soft gradient instead of a hard seam.
Putting two photos side by side is easy and almost always looks like two photos side by side. The join is what gives it away. Blending means each photo fades into the other across the seam, so the eye reads one image rather than a collage.
The same approach handles three, four or five photos in various arrangements, which is useful for a before-and-after, a set of related shots, or a header image built from several sources.
Step by step
- Open EasyFade and choose to blend. On the website, or in the Canva app if that is where your design lives.
- Say how many photos. Two through five. The available arrangements change with the number.
- Pick an arrangement. Side by side, stacked, a grid, or a pinwheel. Click through them to see each one before committing.
- Fill the slots. Add a photo to each slot. You can leave a slot empty, or fill one with a flat colour instead of a photo.
- Adjust the seams. Set how wide and how soft each blend is. A wide soft seam dissolves the two together; a narrow one keeps them distinct but removes the hard line.
- Position each photo inside its panel. Drag and zoom within a slot so the part of the picture you care about sits where the seam is not.
- Save or add to your design. Download a PNG from the website, or place it straight into your Canva design.
Choosing where the seam goes
The seam should fall across the least interesting part of both pictures. A blend that cuts through a face, a sign or a strong vertical line draws attention to exactly the thing you are trying to hide. This is what the drag-and-zoom inside each panel is for: move the subject away from the join.
Two photos that will not blend well
Blending works on tone and texture, not on content, so it cannot reconcile two photos that disagree too strongly:
- Very different brightness. A bright photo meeting a dark one has a visible band however soft the seam, because the eye tracks luminance edges. Match exposure first.
- Different colour temperature. A warm indoor shot against a cool outdoor one reads as two photos no matter what the seam does.
- Strong lines crossing the seam at different angles. A horizon at one height meeting a horizon at another is the hardest case.
Pick photos that already share a palette and a light direction and the blend does most of the work for you.
Common questions
How many photos can I blend?
Up to five, in several arrangements. Two is the common case.
Is blending free?
No, blending is part of Pro. Fading the edges of a single photo is free.
Can I blend photos inside Canva?
Yes, that is what the EasyFade Canva app does, and it places the result straight into your design.
Can one of the panels be a solid colour?
Yes. An empty slot can take a flat colour instead of a photo, which is useful when you want a photo fading into a block of brand colour.
