How to fade a photo in Canva

Canva can lower a photo's opacity, which fades the whole thing evenly. It has no built-in way to fade one part of a photo into transparency while the rest stays solid. The EasyFade app adds that.

If you have been looking for this in Canva and not finding it, you are not missing a menu. The transparency slider applies to an entire element, so it makes the whole photo ghostly rather than letting one edge dissolve. People often try to fake the effect with a white gradient on top, which works only until the background is not white.

EasyFade is a Canva app, so it runs inside the editor and puts the finished image straight into your design.

Step by step

  1. Open a design in Canva. Any design type. A photo collage or a presentation are common.
  2. Open the Apps panel and find EasyFade. Search for EasyFade in the Apps tab, or use the button on this page to jump straight there.
  3. Choose one photo or several. One photo to fade its edges, or up to five to blend together into a single image.
  4. Add your photos. Upload from your device or use something already in your Canva uploads.
  5. Fade or blend. For a single photo, pick the edges and set distance and softness. For several, pick an arrangement and adjust the seams.
  6. Add it to your design. The result drops into your Canva design as an image with real transparency, so anything you put behind it shows through.

Why the transparency slider is not the same thing

Canva's transparency control sets one opacity value for a whole element. At 50% the entire photo is half there. A fade needs opacity to vary across the image: fully present on one side, fully absent on the other, with a smooth ramp between. That is a per-pixel alpha channel, and it is what the app produces.

What is free and what is not

Fading the edges of a single photo is free, at full resolution, with no watermark. Gradient lines, shapes, inverted fades and blending several photos together are part of Pro. You can try the free part without an account and without entering a card.

Blending several photos in Canva

Pick a number from two to five, choose an arrangement, fill the slots, then set how softly each seam blends. You can drag and zoom each photo inside its own panel so the interesting part is not where the seam falls, and an empty slot can hold a flat colour instead of a photo.

Common questions

Does Canva have a fade tool built in?

Not for fading part of a photo into transparency. The transparency slider changes the opacity of a whole element evenly. Fading one edge while the rest stays solid needs an app.

Do my photos get uploaded to EasyFade?

No. The fade is computed inside the Canva editor on your own device. Your photos are not sent to our servers.

Do I need Canva Pro?

No. The app works on a free Canva account.

Is the EasyFade app free?

Edge fading is free permanently and at full resolution. Blending and the placed fade modes are part of EasyFade Pro, which is separate from Canva's own subscription.
